Mention Metal Slug and my eyes would glimmer with interest!

I can remember playing Metal Slug with my good friend at the arcade for the whole afternoon. Even though we were pretty bad at the game (not controlling the joystick and the other three buttons at their best), there was this excitement just jumping up and down and shooting the advancing troops and paranormal enemies.  If we bother to save the old turbanned guru-looking old men who were tied to a pole, we would be rewarded with some potions or better weapons. And if we’re seeking for extra protection, jumping into vehicles would be the solution and the vehicles could even jump and crouch!

The graphics are kids-friendly with quirky humour. If you ate too much on the way (free food = more points), your characters would grow into warriors with bulging tummies almost instantly. So I guess they were also trying to teach us about greed and eating moderation *grins*

It was simple and thrilling!

The greatest thing about Metal Slug, though, is that the game always restores you. No matter what happens, you can start all over again. Whenever you crash and burn, use up all your lives, splash into the ocean, the game always puts you back together and places you back on the fighting ground ready to start shooting again.

That’s the way with the Lord. He’s absolutely faithful to forgive us and to restore us when we mess up and to get us back into action, hopefully a little wiser after our failures and bad decisions. With Christ we are never out of the game (see 1 John 1:9).

“After you have suffered for a while, the God of all grace, who calls you to share his eternal glory in union with Christ, will himself perfect you and give you firmness, strength, and a sure foundation. To him be the power forever! Amen.” (1 Pete 5:10)
